Preceptorships –
a unique opportunity for medical professionals

Have you ever wondered how you can support up-and-coming medical professionals in a more direct way? While medical congresses do offer great opportunities for learning and networking, a preceptorship offers the same benefits with more interactivity and hands-on experience.

What is a preceptorship meeting?

A preceptorship is a medical education event that takes place at a Center of Excellence, such as a renowned hospital specialising in a particular indication.

The event itself targets a small, select group of participants who are young, aspiring specialists in that indication. They are invited to a two or three-day meeting to listen to presentations by the onsite faculty, including well-known experts in their field. It often includes a tour of the facilities, as well as visits to the onsite labs, clinics, and wards that are particularly relevant to their indication. For instance, researchers and clinicians specialising in rare diseases would often visit an onsite lab where tests are analysed. Depending on the specialisation of the meeting, they might even be able to attend a DaVinci assisted operation.

It also serves as a networking opportunity, both between the participants themselves and also with the faculty members. Patient cases are often presented and discussed, which lead to valuable exchanges on best practice, clinical experiences and challenges in their countries of practice.

Benefits for the participants

The prestigious location and a faculty made up of some of the top experts in the field speak for themselves. What participants value in addition is the opportunity to learn in situ about equipment, testing methods, treatments, and more. Smaller group sizes enable more interactivity, such as peer-to-peer discussions, and it is easier to ask questions directly to the faculty. Depending on the group of participants you invite, this can also become an opportunity to facilitate an exchange of ideas among international colleagues.

The meeting is typically accredited with CME points. It can be hosted by a society, a pharmaceutical company, or any combination of these, including one or more sponsorship opportunities.

Benefits for the client

A preceptorship is not only beneficial for those who participate, but also for the client. Such a meeting provides the opportunity for relationship building, fostering expertise in the field, and a chance to scout and shape talent. It can also lead to a great collaboration between a pharmaceutical company and a medical society.
